Tindley-1079Academic Life at Tindley Summit

Tindley Summit is the one of the first elementary schools in Indiana to follow the Accelerated Schools model, which empowers students through academic rigor and inquiry-based instruction (learn more about the model it here.)

The curriculum at Tindley Summit will have a strong focus on writing and mathematics. Meanwhile, daily student life will focus on building scholar identity among students—a process that includes rituals, routines, academic award ceremonies, presentations, and one-on-one conversations.

All students will have the opportunity to explore their ideas and advance their abilities in an environment that celebrates what it means to be a positive, self-confident individual and a successful scholar. Other aspects of our unique model include:

Focus on Literacy.

One strong focus of the school will be our Literacy Program.  The key components to the model are a 90 minute daily reading block comprised of direct instruction, guided reading and skills practice in phonemic awareness, fluency and comprehension in K-3.  The reading block will be comprised of shared reading, guided reading and independent reading.  We believe that this approach to literacy will be successful in ensuring that all students will achieve grade appropriate standards over time.

Community Outreach.

Tindley Summit looks forward to establishing a long term partnership with community leaders and organizations.  Tindley Summit has developed alliances with organizations such as 100 Black Men, Project Renaissance, Urban League, Gleaners Food Bank, The Champion Project, Meridian Mental Health and more.  For collaboration information, please contact Assistant Principal, Ms. Brandon, at brandon@tindley.org.

Family involvement.  “It Takes a Village”

We believe student success is based on both academic preparation and family participation. Therefore we ask every Tindley family to contribute 50 hours of family service per year (5 hours per month).  Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, or adult siblings of the student can contribute this service.

Tindley Summit has a Family Resource Room in our school to assist our parents with information, resources and will alert them to upcoming activities.  These activities include Parent University which consists of informational sessions to address Tindley protocols and procedures and Family Literacy and Math Nights.  As an educational institution, we believe in the empowerment of all stakeholders.  Therefore, Tindley Summit will be a central location for connecting home and school for the betterment of all.  For more information on the Tindley Summit Parent Resource Center or parental and family involvement, please contact Ms. Brandon, Assistant Principal, at brandon@tindley.org.
